Koshiki-No-Kata (Antique Kata)

Koshiki no kata is an ancient kata. Koshiki no kata originated from the Kito School of Jujutsu which is one of the most celebrated and ancient schools of Japan. A school which Jigoro Kano studied at. Professor Kano felt that Koshiki no kata represented the true distant origins of Judo. The kata has 2 sets, Omote and Ura. The first set being performed slowly and the second set much faster and continuously.

1^st Set - Omote (From The Front Or Fundamental Form)

Tai (Starting Posture)

Yume No Uchi (The Dream)

Ryokuhi (To Master His Strength)

Mizu Guruma (The Water Wheel)

Mizu Nagare (The Stream)

Hiki Otoshi (To Pull And Make Fall)

Kodaore (The Treetrunk)

Uchi Kudaki (To Pulverise)

Tani Otoshi (The Fall In The Valley)

Kuruma Daoshi (The Thrown Down Wheel)

Shikoro Dori (Hold On Shoulder Piece)

Shikoro Gaeshi (Overturning By Shoulder Piece)

Yudachi (Evening Rain)

Taki Otoshi (The Cascade)

2^nd Set - Ura (The Reverse Or Derived Form)

Mi Kudaki (To Reduce The Body To Powder)

Kuruma Gaeshi (To Revolve Like A Wheel)

Muzu Eri (To Folllow The Current)

Ryu Setsu (The Snow On The Willow)

Saka Otoshi (To Throw Down On The Slope)

Yuki Ore (The Branch Broken Under The Weight Of The Snow)

The kata is performed in Judogi and sometimes additionally hakama is worn. (Hakama are black very loose fitting trousers.) The movement of both Uke and Tori is that of someone dressed in feudal armour and so is quite robotic.
